Titanium MineralsIlmenite, HiTi and Leucoxene are mainly used to make pure white, highly light refractive and ultra-violet light absorbing, Titanium Dioxide (Ti02) pigment for use in protective house and car paints; paper; plastics; ink; rubber; textiles; cosmetics; sun screens; leather and ceramics. Because titanium dioxide is non-toxic and biologically inert, it can be safely used in foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals. Super strong, lightweight and corrosion resistant titanium metals are also used in the construction of aircraft, spacecraft and motor vehicles, and for medical implants. Again, its non-reactive properties make titanium one of the few materials the human body will not reject; consequently it is widely used in such medical operations as hip replacements and the installation of heart pacemakers. This super metal is also being increasingly used in the manufacture of strong, lightweight sports equipment, jewellery and other advanced engineering applications.
Zircon SandZircon is used in ceramics, specialty castings and various refractory applications, where its resistance to high temperature and abrasion make it extremely valuable in the manufacturing processes as well as ceramics such as glazes for tiles and sanitary wear. In industry, it is mainly used as a raw material in making refractory bricks, furnace linings and producing pigments in the ceramic industry; where its opacity and hardness gives a whiteness and durability to tiles, sanitary ware and tableware. It is also utilized in a range of other high-tech industrial and chemical applications. Zircon is also available as a zircon flour which is milled by jet mill producing a narrow size distribution and contaminant free flour. Zircon flour has many uses and finds its way into the production of Frit and refractory and foundry applications. Our flour is used primarily in foundry coatings for the metal casting industry.
White Fused AluminaDoral's White Fused Alumina (also known as Artificial Corundum, or Aluminum Oxide) is a high performance granular material of more than 99.5 percent pure Al2O3 with low soda specially suited for high performance monolithic refractories for better refractoriness when compared with regular white fused aluminum oxide. White Fused Alumina Characteristics
White Fused Alumina RangeDoral manufactures a wide range of coarse and fine sizes, providing the refractory industry the capability to blend these sizes and create a unique particle size distribution for optimizing their refractory formulations. Doral's AWA (Australian White Alumina) range of white fused alumina currently includes over 30 size fractions from coarse crushed to Ball milled sizes with further special sizes available to meet individual requirements for use in non slip flooring and laminates. White Fused Alumina ApplicationsThe Principle use of our white fused alumina is in high end refractory products for the steel, foundry, and glass industry. Our products are used in the transfer of molten metal which often requires a durable refractory shape. Such shapes include:
The refractories end up in induction furnace and blast furnace linings, furnace troughs, steel ladle floors, launders, spouts, and nozzles and finds it's way into modern smelting and casting processes due to higher product quality and performance requirements not exhibited by cheaper raw materials. The general trend in the refractories market is towards higher purity refractory raw materials such as Doral's White Fused Alumina. Other common non-refractory applications include:
Fused ZirconiaDoral's ZCO range of fused zirconia is based on technology licensed from the Asahi Glass company and involves the desilication of zircon sand. Zircon is heated to over 2,800 degrees Celsius in an electric arc furnace and dissociates to molten Zirconia and silica. The silica is driven off and collected separately as a silica fume, while the Zirconia is cooled to room temperature to produce a coarse granular material Fused Zirconia RangeThe fused Zirconia is graded, crushed, sized and available in five purities up to 99.3 wt% ZrO2. All grades are available in either milled or unmilled sizes depending on customer requirements. Standard unmilled sizes are <0.5mm or <10 mm while milled sizes are 6um, 4.5um and 3um. Custom sizes are also available upon request. Our Fused Zirconia is monoclinic in shape with typical characteristics such as:
Fused Zirconia ApplicationsFused Zirconia has many unique and complex properties which make it suitable for a variety of different high end refractory, ceramic, and electronics applications. Our Fused Zirconia finds its way in many applications and is used in the following industries and areas:
Fused Zirconia powders are used in the preparation of ceramic pigments which form the basis of most colourants used for tableware, sanitary ware, and floor and wall tiles. They resist high temperature firing processes and the unique crystal structure of Zirconia enables it to make a wide selection of coloured stains ready for application to ceramic tiles. DFM's Zirconia is used by leading international pigment manufacturers to produce praseodymium yellow, vanadium blue, and iron coral pink colours. DFM has a full range of Zirconia grades to suit customer requirements and a fully equipped colours laboratory to develop new grades of Zirconia suitable for pigments and to support customer qualification. Colours can be produced, tested and compared against customer requirements at DFM's facilities to fast track the approval process
Silica FumeDoral produces a high purity silica fume during the manufacture of fused Zirconia. Silica fume is derived from the same zircon used to make fused Zirconia, and is captured from the furnace during the fusion process. Doral's silica fume is a pure white colour due to minimal carbon levels and is called 'SF- 98' to reflect the high combined purity of silica and Zirconia. It is characterized by a particle size less than 1 micron and high specific surface area which makes it a particularly high quality product. The major use for silica fume is in low cement castable refractories used for steel making and construction applications such as the construction of high rise buildings and bridges.
